Because gymnasts are already flexible and strong, many believe that gymnasts will not benefit from yoga. However, yoga works as a great tool to balance out the extremely flexible muscles with the overly tight ones (i.e., back bends vs. forward bends). Inner Strength Yoga’s customized Yoga for Gymnasts not only addresses physical balance and strength, but it also provides benefits in breathing and meditation, which helps gymnasts deal with competitive stress.
Due to gymnasts’ dynamic and repetitive training with high impact on feet, ankles, knees, wrists, and the spine, they usually experience tightness in muscles at a very young age. Overall, the muscles on the back body are very strong and developed while the front body is long and open. The lower back and shoulders are especially prone to longevity issues such as wear and tear due to body posture imbalance. Hyper flexibility of elbow and knee joints are common, causing joint instability. Yoga’s focus on symmetry and balance of the body and mind helps increase body awareness. It encourages proprioception, listening to their bodies and adjusting in their training accordingly…knowing when to push harder, when to pull back, and when to rest.

Needing a little more individual practice? This 70 minute 1 on 1 session is perfect for addressing personal focal areas. It includes exercises and movement patterns tailored to your ability level and modifications can be made for any injuries or problem areas. Posture assists will be provided to help the student receive the maximum benefit from the postures.
